Like Ace said, it's the basis of most modern languages, such as Spanish, French, Italian, and English. That and Greek. Not only that, but several professions (legal, medical, philosophical, literary, etc.) still use Latin terminology. So no. It's not useless at all.

English isn't based off Latin.

No, no it isn't. Languages based off of Latin are known as Romantic languages. English is a Germanic language.

Wrong. English gets its Latin influence primarily from French.

Even if it was useless, I'd totally learn it. I've wanted to learn Latin for ages, but I don't really know why.

Also, your Japanese teacher is stupid. I would've let you borrow mine. He's possibly one of the most awesome teachers in existance and there's no way you would've quit Japanese if you had him as your teacher.

That still means Latin is related to English...

thus-guy, Latin is related to English only because the French conquered England in 1066. There was still Old English before that happened:

That thread is for thoughts in foreign languages, not threads about foreign languages.

Oh, you mean NOW? OK.

It's from Beowulf, an Old English epic poem.
Translation wrote:
Lo! Of the Spear-Danes, in days of yore,
we have heard; of the glory of the people's kings,
how the noble ones did deeds of valour.

It's his dad, James. He comes to Fox in some sort of hallucination after killing Andross's brain. And also in Command in one of the missions.

Star Fox Command was like a Trip to Fanfiction.net gone horribly, horribly, just like a trip to fanfiction.net.

I kind of agree, exjon. But I do enjoy the online multiplayer. Except when whiny 10-year-olds dropout of a WiFi battle because he's losing and totally ends the session.

Those guys suck.

I'm gonna say you're wrong. You obviously have not studied either enough English or enough Latin. I've only studied a tiny bit of Latin myself (and theological Latin at that), but you'd be amazed at how many English terms come straight to us from Latin, or at the very least, show a great deal of Latin influence in them.

My recommendation for you, Quackingstick, actually study the language sometime and see what I'm talking about.

Oh, and I'm not talking about language family classifications. I'm talking about actual terms. English may not be a Romance language, but, as I said before, there are too many terms in our language that originate in Latin.

Which ones? I agree with you, I just have no Funk idea which ones.

Here's just a few off the top of my head:

Super (and just about any term that starts with it). In Latin, it means "over, above".

Aquarium (that one's kinda obvious).

Sole - comes from the term "sola", which means "only".

How about some of these: vision, video, audio, magnify.

People - from Latin populus.

Voice - from Latin vox.

Tremendous.

Dominate.

And on another unrelated note: What happened to this thread's ALL CAPS title?

And the other thing is: Whenever I type a word that has a word beginning in the same letter after it, I type the second word at first.
