I value my ears, thank you very much. Thus the reason why I won't sing either.

Can someone please explain the whole "OH GOD I CAN SEE FOREVER!" fad? I know it's from a Family circus edited comic, but what exactly does it mean?

I'm going to post this because it's what COLA would want:

It's not a "fad", it's a "meme".

fad
- noun
a temporary fashion, notion, manner of conduct, etc., esp. one followed enthusiastically by a group. A fashion that is taken up with great enthusiasm for a brief period of time; a craze.

meme
- noun
a cultural unit (an idea or value or pattern of behavior) that is passed from one person to another by non-genetic means (as by imitation); "memes are the cultural counterpart of genes".

Sounds to me like the term "fad" fits more appropriately than "meme".

fad
recurring instance of something in real life

meme
reccuring instance of something on the Internet.

I think that's the right definition.

If you're going by internet usage of the two terms, it really depends on which sites you get them from. Some prefer to use the term "meme" to mean exactly the same thing that others prefer to apply the term "fad". So, while in reality, the two terms are practically synonymous in internet usage, the whole "It's a 'meme' not a 'fad'!!!ONE!!" comes off as elitist.

In other words, just because /b/ prefers to call it a "meme" does not make it any less of a "fad."

No, I don't think I did.

I dunno on that one. I have seen fad used in reference to the tubes more than enough times to merit a definition similar to both. Personally, this would be my definition:

Internet Phenomina: A recurring instance of something popular on the internet. Widespread and ubiquitous instances of this are commonly refered to as memes, while more localized occurances, limited to only one or two common sites are refered to as fads.

see also: people who have too much time on their hands; internet culture; phone listings of national plumbing services
