Why would you waste magic on a lock when a character with any level of lockpicking can open any door with a single pick?

There are two things wrong with your question.
1) An open lock can only be considered a "waste of magic" if you are either trying to unlock something while being attacked(which is an very unlikely scenario) or if your birth sign is the atronach(in which case magic doesn't recharge).
2) You speak as if you've never broken a pick, which happens very often if your skill is low and the lock is difficult.

Guys, I saw a toy in a local dollar store. I forget what it was, because the giant warning label distracted me so. Here's what it said, verbatim: "WHEN CHILD PLAY THE TOY, SUGGESTION CONTAIN ADULT BESIDE!"
