So, in English today we were going over these old grammar/vocabulary tests that we did a while back. My friend had defined philology as 'the study of Phil'.

I found this waaaaaay funnier than I should have.

Would the reason behind this be that it made you think of a Phil you know of (such as Dr. Phil) or just because the answer your friend gave was that funny in and of itself?

Well, partly because I automatically thought of Phil Argus (and for some reason, this is instantly hilarious), partly because we actually lost marks on the test for incorrect answers (joke answers may or may not count as incorrect answers), and partly because it just sounded funny.
