Through my discussions about Homestar in real life and on the internet, I've noticed what seems to be a fairly odd discrepency. As most of you know, Homestar and his buddies, and the humor over at the site, are not really age-specific. An 8-year-old will probably laugh as hard at some of the jokes as a 20-year-old. There is really no specific audience that Homestar is tailored to. However, it seems that at many of the online forums about homestar (and certainly more prevelant in those with a constant influx of members), the forum is generally dominated by young teenagers. We're talking in the 12-16 year old demographic. Although certainly exceptions (I'm one of them at age 19), this seems to be the general trend. .NET was like this, the wiki seems to be like this, Burning Horizon's forum seems to be like this, Independent Homestar was like this, and from what I've seen at StrongFans.com, they're like this too. However, I'm just as likely to see a homestar t-shirt on someone my age as somebody in their early teens. Why do you think this is so? Do you even agree with my original assertion? |

It seems to be that different age groups of Homestar fans congregate around different fan forums. For example, the USSH*R seems to have much younger fans than the ones you find around here, or at least less educated. As for why this happens, I have no idea. One forum or even 10 forums are not an accurate representation of fans. As with a group as diverse as the ones that watch Homestar, you could really get hundreds of fans together and still not see the basic types of people that make up the group. So no, a couple thousand users (a fraction of the many people who enjoy Homestar) on a few forums are not a good representation of the overall characteristics of a fan. |

If I had to guess, I would say that it's because teens, in general, have more free time for Internet type stuff.. We grownups have other stuffs to do.. |

The thirteen and fouteen year olds don't have work and night classes like us elders do. That's why there are so many on the forums.

I think young teens have been growing up with the internet more, but they also have some time on their hands (some). I'm 15, so when I was young the internet was just becoming popular. |

hey, is it just me or are teenagers and young adults such as me and many others on this forum gonna get phased out because of all of theese older people from Homestarrules forums? i myself do feel threatend by the intergration of Homestarrules and Hrwiki forum members, and i feel that something could cause a spark between the two and end up in my worst fear. a forum war. i know tah tgis has nothing to do wit hthe topic at hand and im sorry for it. what we all gotta know is that Homestarrunner is for everyone of any age. |

You overestimate the age of our members. Although we probably have a higher percentage of posters over 16, 95% of the forum is still under age 20. The demographic of .NET (which was just 3 years ago) was very similar to the wiki's current makeup. Choc: I find it somewhat coinscidental, that you are age 15 and have Vash the Stampede as your avatar. When I first started visiting .NET, I too was 15 and had Vash as my avatar. |

Well.... i'm 14, so i cant say much but it probably is because we have more time on our hands, and when your at school, you get school holidays so that gives you even more time! like I am on school holidays right now! |

Most of the rest of us (Me, Teff, Shopiom, and others) are around 14. And Jesty's even younger than I am. Can ye believe it? |

I'm around the group of 12 year olds on this forum. I'm 13, and one member thought I was at least 15 once. (that was before I started posting my voice.) |

I'd imagine many older Homestar fans would avoid forums because of how utterly bad forums tend to be. Especially considering the wide rage of H*R fans, you could expect a forum to be anywhere from an idiot bin to the biggest bunch of jerks you'd ever met. But as someone mentioned, this forum contains some of the most mature young teens I've ever known in my life. I was really surprised when I saw the age poll--I was expecting more people to be 18 or so years old. |

i was also pleasantly suprised when i saw the poll and found quite a few users here were under 18... i am one of the few *ahem* "elders?" amongst this crowd. you kids play nice. that's why i visit... plus it's one of the few interesting, educational and mature (as in civic minded and respectful of others... mostly) of forums that i've ever been to... i think the reason the older homestar fans don't frequent forums is because some might not know its there, think its probably not fun, is overrun by immature "trolls" or are just too tired after work to look at yet another computer screen... now a tv screen, that's another story. you'd think i would be tired of computers, after working on designs all day that i wouldn't come home and do my freelance... aahoo, you are mistaken. i am pretty much always working. ah, the life of the over 25. so fun.

I don't think age really even matters on the internet, especially in forums. Present yourself in a mature manner and the rest will take care of itself. I think I do that most of the time... I'm 14, by the way. |

I've got you beat. StrongRad thought I was 19.
But yeah, the fan forums ARE mostly the younger group of H*R Fans. That's not a bad thing, though. |

Typically it's maturity that is more important. For example you have a 25 year old troll, and a 14 year old who has a good head on his shoulders. Both of which are better at wording things and using grammar than I am. I'm 19 by the way. |

Wow, I'd never thought so many people were younger than me, In fact I though I was pretty much in the younger ones. Meh I'm just a 17 years old college freak. ¸ Also HR is very funny without being either vulgar, sexual, or violent So I think it's one of the reason of the huge popularity and the great scale of ages. For exemple Ctrl Alt Dlt, a webcomic has a huge succes but it's very, VERY vulgar and somewhat sexual and violent, so I'm sure the average age of the reader must be 18 +. See me point? Even though I'm in college and sometimes I want to kill myself from overwhelming work ( yeah I'm crazy I'm doing in three years diploma program, in two years ). I still find the time to waste my time in the net. Though maybe the fact that I sleep about 4-5 hours a day might help. Also I'm considering myself young even though in ten months I'll be an adult... |

Do you know is the collage crowd around where you live knows of H*R? I think collage kids make up a large part of the demographic of who watches Homestar. I also think (being a fan of both) that H*R and CAD (Ctrl+Alt+Del, it's a webcomic) balance each other out well. On one side we have two crazy brothers drawing their dumb animal characters, and on the other we have a slightly drunk swaggering webcomic artist with a taste for lawyer blood. They work well togther on Monday afternoons. |

Heck, I'm seventeen years old and in college...and if it weren't for being in college, I wouldn't have so much free time for Internet use. 'Cause you know, the interweb at my college is free for me, fast and certainly not dial-up, and so forth. Anyway, fortunately I used up all my n00b at 11 on a Simpsons fanforum. I was still all CAPITALIZATION'D! and GOOD SPELLING'D!, even then, but it was more just a matter of me being some dumb kid with nothing terribly important to say. Kinda like a freshman in high school (I believe I also worked off my freshmanism at said forum). Now, of course, I can never go back. Too embarrassed. Though even then I was smart enough not to use my real name.

Huuummm When I said College, I refered to one step higher than High school, you know I succefully finished High School. Maybe it's just me, but I think you misunderstood my meaning, and my (somewaht low) degree of education. But I agree CAD and HR makes good mondays... I personaly think we should all get GOOD SPELLING'D, but it's just me. |
