For lack of a better way of saying it,duh.

I mean a page devoted entirely to inside jokes. I know it's not a very good idea, but I figure I might as well throw it out there with the rest of the slosh.

Oohh. My mistake. Sorry.

And.. we still have a page on the wiki with inside jokes on it. I'm not sure why we need another.

I like the idea of redirecting to Hrwiki.org....but could you imagine all the trolls and people defaceing the site to say "Hi" all the time? I'd suggest doing the thing where you link to a aternate hrwiki.org where you can't edit...

Wow, all I can say is wow. First of all, no one in any official capacity around here is considering putting up the toon. Secondly, this issue has nothing to do with whether or not TBC would be offended. It has everything to do with whether or not we would be violating copyright laws. Please don't send emails to The Brothers Chaps on behalf of the Wiki ever again.

EDIT: In other news, Spread Firefox is back up.

I know this is a bit late, since the balls already rolling with the design, but I recently found this site, basically the Zelda version of what we're trying to do. One base site, with links to all the other ones, ect. It seems like a pretty good format, and it's cool that it's somewhat personalized, so just thought I'd meantion it as a possible example.

Edit: While you're there, be sure to click on the cucco* at the top of the screen a couple of times. If we can do stuff like that, this is gonna be the best thing ever.

*Changed in view of computerdude33's observation, thanks.

It's not too late; design balls haven't rolled yet. The ZeldaBlog certainly is a good example of design integrated with a theme, and that guy gets away with it precisely because the graphics he uses are upwards of 10 years old. I'd love to do something like that with our site, but I'm just not sure what the implications would be on the legal front.

At any rate, you're far from being too late. There is still a lot of work to be done before graphic design can even be considered. The more important work lies in selecting a content management system and in getting all the ducks to line up. Once we have our ducks in a row, we can pretty much skin the site however we wish.

Yea, I wouldn't want it to be a total knockoff of TBC's style, to the extent of the ZeldaBlog. Just to a certain extent, to give it a H*esque feel. Like the main Wiki logo on the top left of the wiki, or the Homestar Runner and Strong Bad main page backgrounds. I'm not sure how much we could get away with without being greedy...

But I was more specifially pointing to the general layout, specifically these features:

1) Posts on the main page. Updates, H*R related news, general comments (from qualified people, to prevent flooding), ect would keep it simple, yet comprehensive.

2) Categories for these posts. Perhaps Updates, News, Merchandise, ect. to simplify searching for something in particular. If somebody doesn't check the site for a few months, they could simplify their search of topics to find out about just news, or new merchandise to buy, ect.

3) Easy to access list of fansites on the right. I don't know how big our list would be, but if it was around that size, it would be prominent, easy to access, and split into categories for site choosing ease.

4) Pretty much everything else I liked about the layout is already rolling at the alpha site, such as feeback to posts, room for anybody to make an account, ect.

The title should be "homestarrunner.com it's .net."

Ithink you mean "HomestarRunner.net...It's Dot Com!"

Anyway, about the Zelda-site-like site...
TOTALLY TOTALLY TOTALLY! I will get behind the Site like the Zelda one 110%! It is the best idea suggested. All in all, it rocks. I thought that there was not going to be any good idea for hr.net, but this is it.

Anything I can do to help with the design/planning/creation of this site would be great.

The one thing I can think of is...

People familiar with the Fanstuff Wiki would need to be aware that there is a clear distinction between what should go on ".net" and what should go on the fanstuff wiki. You know, basically the difference between things that exist and things that COULD exist.

Once again, this idea rocks.

No, he was making a joke about the .net: it's dot com joke. Also, if you read a few pages back, we've said that if we put some fanstuff things on the site, it would NOT be freely editable, and JoeyDay and some of the mods would choose the best of the best to go on the site.

What I meant was that this shouldn't be a place for Fanstuff at all. I meant some people might think that they should start putting Fan Fic and stuff on the new site, when the site should only contain stuff related to existing or future H*R.com toons and such.

Don't count on seeing fanstuff on the site. Nobody wants the task of choosing among the vast amount of fanstuff created and saying what's good enough to put on the site and what isn't. We either have to show everybody's fanstuff or nobody's, and there's no way we can do the former.

sorry... i know i said i was gone but... aren't any graphics you create for the site considered fanstuff technically? if you do like the zelda site, that involves making graphics... possibly animated graphics... (the chicken) and for those graphcs you'd have to do some borrowing from the original source (homestarrunner.com) the only difference is that (unlike the flash thing we decided AGAINST *hint hint to all who keep forgetting... i'm simultaneously honored and annoyed at that topic's resurfacing*) it doesn't use sound. well, there is more of a difference than that... but do you see what i mean?

Why do we have to show everybody's? Take the Imitation SBemails, those have won numerous awards. Therefore, they're ahead of the rest (no offense to other, but they are) So if the select fanstuff idea was chosen, which it seems like it won't be, sadly, we could put things like thos on there.

No fanstuff. Period. We just don't want it there.

And Jenny, designing a few graphics for the site and allowing user fanstuff up there are two completely unrelated things.

My my... look what mayhem I've caused. ;) I thought it would be amazing just to get a site off the ground in a matter of weeks with a few hundred daily visitors; now I'm subtly influencing the development of homestarrunner.net. I'm utterly shocked. :)

I haven't read the whole thread, but being a fan of H*R, I think that the plans you have going sound really good, and I think the blog nature of ZeldaBlog would go along really well for a portal site (with news posts) for H*R. Just my 2¢, of course. :D

And frankly, no matter how you choose them, someone gets their feelings hurt. We're trying to make the site inclusive, not exclusive.

No matter what you do with the site, someone's idea gets excluded. You won't get a completely inclusive site in the end. It's impossible. And I'm sure some people have already gotten feelings hurt on here. Even if it wasn't intentional.

On a different note...

Idea: Portal site (obviously), with logos from the diff sites and descriptions, followed by the latest news post in a little box next to it/near it/under it? I'm thinking in a list type thingy. Maybe somebody said this already. I dunno. I just pictured it in my head. Oh... and using the Field as like a background, with blue boxes (like the color of the forum) with all the aforementioned junk in them. And... maybe... a banner at the top with a picture of sillouhetted hills and "Homestar Runner Dot Net" or Homestarrunner.Net" and (i think this isn't a knock off tell me if i'm wrong) like when you click on a letter or the "." in ".Net", homestar runs across the hills (sillouhetted) behind the page title like in that one intro...

Holy Crap! The Missing Link? Haha, that's funny. For anybody who doesn't know, he's the guy that helped make ZeldaBlog, he also webmasters The Grand Adventures. He's their JoeyDay, or at least Tom. This is the last place I expected to see him...

Anyways, back on track. I don't want fanstuff either. But I am curious, just how far CAN we go with site design? Just an icon or two here and there, or full fledged design as far as ZeldaBlog?[/u]

I think the goal is to make it fun and interactive without using flash, so there'll probably be banners and stuff.

I think homestarrunner.net should do what its doing now, redirecting to the hrwiki.

I'm perfectly happy with the explanation that we are amazingly cool. :D Everything else is just icing on the cake.

But I digress and interrupt the conversation, so I'll be quiet now!
