We're still here, Gravey - maybe it's your compy? |

It used to use about a third of the bandwidth, and it would last for about three-fourths of the month. So it isn't that surprising that it went down since we had a very busy month. Yeah, probably. With school, next month shouldn't be as crowded. I hope. How much money, if any, does it cost to have this forum hosted here? |

Everything is down but the Forum. You can however access the chatroom using an IRC client. |

The wiki chat java thing at chat.hrwiki is down, because it's on the same server. The channel itself is not down, so you'll have to go to it from somewhere else, like http://hsrforum.com. |

This is the last month we'll see the infamous 509. We'll be switching to a new server at the beginning of next month (September). The new server is exactly like the one we're currently hosted on, but we'll have it all to ourselves rather than sharing it with other accounts. As has been mentioned earlier in this thread, the new server will give us 2 TB (that's terabytes) of bandwidth throttled to 10 Mbits/sec and will cost $260/month. We can save a varying percentage of that depending on if we pay monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. We'll try to pay quarterly as often as we can. We've got enough to pay for the first three months out of our current funds and we'll probably hold a Fall 2005 pledge drive next month to build up our funds for the next quarter. We're going to be reselling website hosting on the new server to recoup cost, though it hasn't yet been decided how that will be branded. No one will make profit from the proceeds of that hosting. All the money will go straight into the wiki funds. Pricing and bandwidth/storage limits also haven't been decided yet, but I'm sure they'll be very competetive. If you've got a website hosted somewhere else, please consider hosting it with us to support the wiki. |

A few people have asked why the forum is still up when the wiki is down, and whether or not it's costing us more money to keep them hosted in two different places. Yes, the forum is currently hosted on a different server from the wiki. No, it's not costing us any additional funding. The folks over at homestarrules.com have been nice enough to give us free hosting for our forum. Once the new server is up, it will probably make sense to move the forum back, but that hasn't really been decided yet. Hope this clears things up. EDIT: I'm sure many more questions will come up on this thread, so I'll try to answer them all. Here's one I just noticed: IanTheGecko wrote: Does that mean I can host my banners & stuff I make for people here?
Yes, you'll be able to host your images on our server for a monthly fee. It looks like you're using free services to host your images now, so it would probably be wise to stick with that unless you're dissatisfied with their service. Our hosting service will be targeted more to users who own their own domain and are already paying some kind of monthly fee for their hosting. Let me know if you have more questions. |

It's good to know that the forum will still be up. The good thing about the Wiki being down is that it will only be down 3 days. The fact that we are getting our own server is the best news I have heard in a while.

Very early Saturday morning (when this thread was first begun), the wiki was 509'd. Just a few hours later, however, it was back up. Do we expect this most recent outage to be brief like the first one, or are we down for the remainder of August? And if we are gone for the month, how come it came back online earlier but not this time? |

Holy Carp... Joey made 2 posts... One is wild... Two, I'm all like "Whoa'D!"... He's right, the forum is hosted by Homestarrules.com, now... Big thanks to that dude, bigger thanks if he's doing it free. Anywhos.. The wiki going down is still bad, but that new server is gonna help tons. Too bad it's gonna run about 5 times as much, but, as the saying goes, "you gotta spend money to make money".. Oh, wait, nobody is making money here... Ummm, "You gotta spend money to not make money?" I'm-a see how my finances turn out, then I'll try to donate something (prolly not gonna be able to give more than $20-25 or so), but every bit helps, I suppose.. If I get a research position next semester, I'll definately give some good coin (research position = free tuition, free books, free health and dental insurance and $700/month stipend = good).. |

Two terabytes of bandwidth. Wow. I may be interested in the hosting, but naturally I'd need more details. I can tell you that with such a powerful server you wouldn't even notice my sites on there.

I'm guessing the first time one of the administrators purchased more bandwidth, and it ran out again. |

Ummm... How many gigabytes are there in a terabyte. If it's as many as I think it is, Then I'm really impressed. Thats a pretty high cost, though. We'll need a lot of donations to keep the place running. |

1024 usually, but as it's sold by the GB, it may be 1000 so the number sounds bigger than it actually is (standard practice, that...) |

The wiki donators won't have to support the full cost. Joey is going to try to rent out hosting to other sites, bringing in extra revenue to go straight into the server funds. In a sense, he is going to be his own mini hosting company. |

No one has purchased any extra bandwidth. I'm not exactly sure what's going on. As of right now, the wiki appears to be working normally. I'm trying to get in touch with our host to see what's up. Stay tuned. EDIT: Oh, and for all those who are surprised by me posting: sorry about my recent reclusiveness. I plan to be much more active around here for the foreseeable future. EDIT again: I talked with our host, and they decided to be nice and give us an extension since we've already negotiated the upgrade to the dedicated server. The wiki will be up the rest of the month. |

Ah, that's good. The 509 is defeated...for now... I was getting sick of that thing. Good solution, even if it is only temporary. |

There's nothing temporary about it. It should be permanent. |

By temporary, he probably means that it'll only be a matter of time before we outgrow that server too. |

Hopefully, if wiki use has grown enough to use up nearly 15x the bandwidth, the user base and hence the donations will have grown in proportion too
And yes, I will get around to donating one of these months... |

You would hope, but with the Wiki still growing and The Brothers Chaps still making toons, in a couple of years it could really add up. |

But isn't a terabyte two bytes farther away" than a gigabyte? Like, a gigabyte is first, then some other byte, then a terabyte, meanng a terabyte is about 1000x1000, equalling a million gigabytes! How could we ever o past that? Maybe I'm remmebereing incorrectly, but I'm pretty sure.. |
