Edit by JoeyDay: This thread has been created by merging two previous threads together. Don't get confused. The original threads were "Five Zero Nine" and "The wiki will be down for five days, can we handle it?".

Well it lasted to the 27th... that's an improvement.

At least we still have the forum now :D

This topic is probably not that necessary. Be that as it may, I still want to go on the record and say I was using the wiki as it went down. Looks like it was about 5:24 UTC when it 'offically' went down. I was in the process of deleting some pages that a troll called "WikiNazi" had created with harsh language.

Since this is the first month when we will have the forum open all while the wiki is down, I felt it necessary to make a topic for the occasion.

I don't know what the other one is though.

I'm surprised the forum is working. If only there was a way to increase the bandwidth of the wiki.

Wait, without the Forum hosted on the same server the Wiki still went down? We've got issues.

Well both Phlip and myself created a topic about the same issue at the almost exactly the same time (1:30 am Eastern). Since posts are rounded to the nearest minute, I wonder who was "beaten to the punch"?

Phlip's uses a more subtile method, spelling out the cardinal numbers of the error code, while mine presents both a question and points out how many days we must live in "exile". I guess both topics have their merit...

Well, porplemontage, many see it as a good thing. We at least know many many fans are visiting the knowledge base. Like you, I did side with Interrupter Jones (or was it Tom?) when he said that the wiki would likely be OK for bandwidth usage for a few months. I guess August was a busier month than we thought.

I noticed this thread before the other one (I was surfing the Wiki at the very moment it crashed, so I probably helped crash it :P) but I'm not sure if it was up first.

I don't think the other thread was there just after I posted this, but I can't be sure...

Let's just call it a tie ;)

Does this mean since the Wiki and the Forum are on different servers that we have to pay for twice as much?
Wow...5 days...

The Homestar Runner Wiki Forum is hosted by homestarrules.com

That would explain it.

Perhaps this is the last month of bandwidth problems for a while. Even though the forum was moved, moving it had to take up some bandwidth, but next month won't have the drain of the forum at all. I guess we'll see. Ah, well...

I guess someone purchased more bandwidth, so it will be back for the rest of the month.
Next month Joey might set up the new server. In case you haven't heard, it will be on it's own server with 2 terabytes of bandwidth. (And it will cost $260 a month, total)

This was one was posted at least 25 seconds earlier.

Just a heads-up there...

Well, most people will be going back to school soon, so that'll lower the bandwith usage. I don't think we'll go down for as long next month. But this makes no sense, we usually go down for about six days WITH the forum still on, and the foum takes out a large chunk, shouldn't we barely be going down? I guess since there was an extra Monday this month, which added more bandwith usage.

I'm not mad. I call it "somewhat-kinda-but-not-really-annoyed".

I can't wait for the wiki go to a new server. 509 no more!(Finally at last!)

Well, isn't a 509 better than not having the 509? Without the 509's, the website woulda shutdown. 509 is a way for the website to recooperate from traffic.

509s are hardly to be considered a way for the website to recuperate. It's not a cooling down time, it's a time in which the site is inaccessible due to the site running out of bandwidth. It's not as if the site spends that time regenerating bandwidth, it flat-out runs out and is given more at the start of the new month.

And what do you mean, it would shut down without 509s?

We are experiencing more 509 difficulties right now.

I am officially confused. This forum used to use about half of the total bandwidth.

Can someone like JoeyDay explain?

It used to use about a third of the bandwidth, and it would last for about three-fourths of the month. So it isn't that surprising that it went down since we had a very busy month.
