Yay, we're back.

It's my intention to donate someday. No guarantees.
In the meantime, maybe we ought to discuss...."efficient forum visiting"! That's how we use the forum as to also use lesls bandwidth.

How much bandwidth does the forum consume anyway?

150 GB, which doesn't last the whole month

It's actually about 180 GB, and that's for the whole site.

The Wiki used about 110 GB last month, the forum used about 60 GB, and the fanstuff wiki used a little more than 10 GB.

Here are the numbers:

Code:
Jul 2005
hrwiki.org            109.58 Gig
chat.hrwiki.org       59.98 Meg
fanstuff.hrwiki.org   13.52 Gig
forum.hrwiki.org      60.39 Gig
old.hrwiki.org        69.41 Meg
Total                 183.61 Gig

If we do keep getting 509'd again and again, maybe Verio would be a good option.

Jones has discussed this.

They have a $49.95/month plan on a fast server with unlimited bandwidth.

You sound like a salesperson, HrWikiFan.

We've found that a lot of companies which offer "unlimited" bandwidth really offer something that sounds kinda like unlimited bandwidth but when you do the math, it really isn't. We're finding ourselves spending a lot of time reading the fine print.

I don't think we'd looked at Verio before, but we'll add it to the list.

The bandwidth does seem to be unlimited there. However, that price is for a shared server. For resource intensive sites like we have here, they need to have a dedicated server. The cheapest dedicated server solution they offer is $599 a month and in that case, the bandwidth is limited to 300GB per month. If they need 500GB ever, that boosts you to $899 per month.

And the shared server version doesn't even give you SSH access. FTP + control panel only.

So, it said we are moving to another server.
With this server has more bandwidth, eliminating the 509's for the time being?

It said that just the forum was moving to a new server. It didn't say anything on the wiki main page, and 509's shut them both down.
So we will probably still get 509'd.

But without the forum taking up Wiki bandwidth we're cool.

And the Forum is now hosted by homestarrules.com. See footer.

Ah, cool. Now the Wiki doesn't have to deal with the ginormus bandwith the forum takes up.

If we get 509'D again, it won't be for very long.

Welcome back, folks.

As y'all have observed, the forum and the wiki are now on two different servers. Simon from homestarrules has graciously offered to host our forum for free. We still have full control just like we did before, but it's now about 60GB of bandwidth each month we don't have to worry about. Send that guy your thank-you notes.

This means a couple of things for you guys: First, unless the planets align just so, the wiki going down will not mean the forum going down as well. Second, this doesn't solve our problems. For the time being, we have a bit of a reprieve from 509 errors. Saving a third of our bandwidth means about 50% more time before we exceed our limit, which means we the wiki should be able to make it to the end of the month, probably for the next couple months. But even without the forum, we'll still be using 140 or 150GB each month (this is all back-of-the-envelope math, don't assume accuracy), which is still an incredible amount of bandwidth and still really close to our cut-off.

In other words, this is a temporary fix. The forum will (if all goes according to plan) stay up for the forseeable future due to Simon's generous gift, but we're still growing, and without some more changes -- which we're working on -- the wiki is going to go down again eventually.

Thanks for sticking around, folks, and thanks for all the suggestions and donations.

That was like some kind of State of the Wiki address. Coull.

Arg. That explains everything. So the forum is (almost) safe from the 509s when they come back? Cool.

It's sad that the Wiki is in such dire straits. I'd donate if I could. This is a great solution for the time being. *applause*

Great news! Yeah, I know we're not out of the woods yet with the Wiki going down, but I don't check the Wiki anywhere near as much as I do the Forum (and certainly never edit it at all!), so going without it for a few days at the end of the month would be no big loss for me. Although I know that's not the case for some of you.

I must say, though, I've been thinking about my internet addiction a ton the last few months, and I'll probably end up taking my own 'personal' 509's off here (and my other online hangouts) on certain occasions anyway. StrongCanada, you know exactly where I'm coming from here. ;) But hopefully I'll be able to do that ONLY when I choose to myself, not when I'm forced to along with other posters due to bandwidth issues.

Yay! 509's begone! At least for now. But doesn;t the forum taken up about 70 GB, or is that the wiki? If it does, and we only have 60 GB for the forum, will we still get 509'd?

The math is pretty fuzzy, since we're trying to predict the future. Anyway, extrapolating over a month, the forum will take about 70GB, everything else about 145GB. They used to all share a server that has a hard limit of about 180GB each month. So with the forum now hosted elsewhere, we have about 35GB of "wiggle room." That's not much, but unless we have greater-than-expected growth, we should be fine for a few months.

Yeah sorry typed it wrong, "got".

Yeah, usually people don't tell me to eat roses.

but back on topic... the wiki should probably be okay for atleast 4-5 months, unless a huge popularity spike comes around. And by then I'm sure the admins here will have figured out some super plan to deal with it.

I wonder if it is possible to create a custom 509 page. *breaks into someone's Cpanel*. No. Appearantly not.

It would rock though.... "Ow, my bandwidth!"

Yeah, then would be cool,l but we wouldn't be able to, as it would take up bandwith, and if there is no bandwith, that's not possible.

This logic cannot be defeated.

Apart from that one, does the Wiki have custom error pages?

It's pretty easy to find out...

http://www.hrwiki.org/this_is_a_page_th ... t.html.php
(note the lack of an index.php/ part in the url - otherwise it will search the wiki for it)
This gives a customised 404 Not Found error message

Also, for an Apache server (the most common, which the wiki runs on) and also for a some other servers,
http://www.hrwiki.org/.htaccess
will give a (non-customised) 403 Forbidden message

They're usually the only messages people bother to customise, as the others are rarely seen.
