I honestly wouldn't say so, at least not all of it, since probably the most famous phrase of this is 'Holy Crap' and then there was the Strong Bad E-Mail Rap feat. Coach Z that went "COACH Z: And if you're tryin' to fade me then ya must smoke crack!
STRONG BAD: Scroll buttons, oh yeah, like that heart attack." So what does everyone else think?

Heh... there are people that think homestarrunner.com is intended for children? Like, the littlest, tiniest babies? :sb:

Actually, there are portions of the site that seem to be specifically designed for a really young audience (I think this is particularly true of the older toons, and other things like puppet stuff), but some of it does seem more designed for older people who would actually get certain references on the site, and the stoner humor aspect can get quite a bit more out there than any kid's show I know of, though the brothers have thankfully never hit crude or inappropriate levels. I think of H*R.com as a mostly PG-rated site with maybe the occasional dabbling into both G and (a bit more rarely) PG-13.

Making Out. That email, even though it is my least favorite email ever, is my proof that Homestar Runner is meant for a wide variety of audiences. Plus all the 80s pop culture references.

Yeah, I really see the H star as a place intended for all ages.

It's like The Fairly Odd Parents; the show's plot and such and the network it appears on, would suggest it's aimed at the 7 to 10 age range, or something of that sort. But its clever mechanics and pop-culture references would suggest an older demographic to like the show.

I told my friend Rob that FOP isn't a kids show cause it has all those references. When he asked me what refences, the first thing I thought of was that there's an episode with Adam West. Yeah. Definitely not completely aimed toward kids.

I picked the second one, because they say, "crap" and "freakin'" from time to time, and sometimes talk about the bases. It is pretty kid-oriented, though.

Kids watch it, but it's definitely not a "kids' show" with all the crap and such.

I was just thinking about this this morning. Is there (or should there be) a parent's guide to the site? I mean, something that documents all the "language", violence, drug references, etc. on the site? The wiki is a bit too long to look through for that purpose. There are sites that do this for movies, why not for websites? By the way, I am nowhere near having children, but I think a rating would be helpful to parents.

Personally, I don't think there's much that's particularly offensive on the site, but I don't think it's specifically intended for children. What's a good cut-off age, do you think? 10? 12?

It's mostly made for like, 10 and up. Like, a PG movie. Not squeaky clean but not PG 13.

I don't really think it could be a kid's show. Strong Bad makes fun of kid's shows. And kid's books. And SB is not cut out for a kid's show part

In a couple of interviews TBC have expressed surprise that it's become such a hit with the wee chillins. I wouldn't be surprised if sometime in the future they created another site or maybe a spin-off site with a little more edge to it.

I voted the second option. It's not too bad, but I wouldn't show it to my five-year-old cousin.

I don't really see anything wrong with it. I already say crap all the time anyway (probably because of the website). My 10 year old brother loves it. Even my 2 year old sister watches it sometimes. I'll just be watching a new email or something and she'll come in and say, "are you watching Strong Bad? I want to see the girl."

I voted the second one.

I showed it once to my 5-year-old neighbor and he didn't get it. He liked it, because every youngun' likes any cartoons, but he never really laughed at it (well, except for The Cheat). So it's not really the crude nature of the show that I don't think it's for litlte kids, but because of the plots and the 80's references.

I think I read once where TBC were thinking of doing a curse episode where the characters just break lose and cuss each other out, but decided not to because they knew their audience included young ones. That would definately not be for kids.

So I say no, it's not really intended for kids, but many kids watch it anyways and TBC try to keep it clean.

Well, in terms of the humor, I think its aimed for the middle school thru basic college age. Its sophisticated enough that they think they are watching something smartly funny, that little kids can't get, but after reaching adulthood, it might be a bit too unsophisticated for their tastes.
As for whether its clean for little children- of course it is!!! I don't see where you get "violence, language, drugs, etc." out of Homestar. Language: freakin' and crap, while slightly vulgar and sometimes uncalled for, are not swear words, and are words that most 2-year-olds know in today's society. The violence is the same kind of violence they'd be subject to watching anime or Looney Tunes. The drug references- well- I kinda view any innuendo or references to other adult-ish things sortof like the content in a Dreamworks or Pixar animated film- any references (which there are few of in Homestar) will be unnoticed by younger children, and meanwhile, the older audience will be amused and own't feel like they're wasting thier time.
Still, I think Homestar is appropriate for young children, while not nescessarily a "kids' show".

I don't think a 2-year-old knows the words "crap" or "freakin'". If they do then I'm impressed.

I kind of agree with Swooshoman. I don't think most 2-year olds would know the words crap or freakin. (My sister watches it but doesn't say those words) However, I'm pretty sure 2 year olds wouldn't understand references to drugs and stuff. Sometimes when I watch a movie or something that I used to watch all the time when I was young, I'll notice references to drugs or stuff and wonder why I never noticed them before.

No I don't think it was intended for kids, but it is kid friendly to a certain extent.

My mom thought that dragon was inappropriate and made it seem like it was wrong to laugh at that part with the peasant on fire. C'mon its a whole bunch of random pictures and a little destruction. She tought video games was inappropriate because it had making out in it. (My mom is very strict and thinks pretty much everything to be inappropriate)

So in conclusion, whether or not H*R is a kids show is completely based on what you think is age appropriate.

Nah, wouldn't agree with that. There is a lot of violence in Looney Tunes! Anvils, dynamite. See? Maybe. Algodono... Maybe not, but that's my opinion

Never fear, Princess. A spin-off site wouldn't neccessarily cause H*R to end. Unless they didn't have the means to do both.

On topic - the only reason I haven't shown this site to my 8 year old nephew is because I know I'll never get my computer back if I do!

I think it's meant for an older audience to get the 80s references, but it's certainly sutable for little children. My 8 year old brother loves Homestar. He doesn't really get the plots though and the making out stuff goes over his head. The ONE drug reference that's not even on the site anymore doesn't bother me. Really Homestar is annoyingly clean to me, but I deal with it because it's beautifully funny.

I'm glad Homestar is as clean as it is...I get sick of every movie and TV show and website being full of repetitive bad language and unnecessary who-knows-what. H*R.com is truly an oasis of, um, not-bad-language-and-stuff. Some parents would take objection to some things on the site, but I think it's fine for kids, probably a 10-year old is the youngest who would really appreciate the site. Or younger, if they're mature and/or smart for their age. Ramble over.

I don't think it's really a kid's show- do kid shows say the word "crap" a lot? Not really. But they still say "crap", and that definitely qualifies as HALF AND HALF. Sort of. What makes it a kid's show is that recent Big Toon "Bug In Mouth Disease", and that theme song video way back in 2000(excluding Strong Bad attempting to throw a knife at Strong Sad who is strapped to a spinning circle of sorts, though I'm sure the knife misses him and lands next to his head, which is becoming some...scenario-ish thing for cartoons). That's just my personal opinion, and I'm too lazy to find out the rest. Maybe when I'm older...

I don't see H*R as a kid's show, but rather an Animaniacs or Rocko's Modern Life for the 21st century. Sure, you have cartoony visuals and random, fast-paced action, but you also have irreverence and slightly obscure pop-culture references, making it a treat for Generations X, Y, & Z.

It's not inappropriate for kids, and there's certainly enough that they'd enjoy (particularly the older things), but the newer stuff has more pop-culture references and the like that would just fly over most kids' heads.

I always think of the "Best Things" email, and how it seems like no one sees the parody of those old Jabberjaw or Josie and the Pussycats cartoons without reading it from the Wiki, they didn't watch them years ago and probably won't get the email as a result.

I see it in the same vein as The Simpsons. sort of, cross demographic

I wouldn't call it a "kids show", but it doesn't have anything to do with the language. It's not a kids show because of nature of the humor which can be funny to all ages.

Same, but I only knew the reference because I'm a cartoon nerd who's watched Boomerang quite a few times :P

I guess we can sum it up this way:

Is H*R intended for children? Not really. They might not understand all the humor.
Is H*R OK for children to watch? Yeah, for the most part, despite a little crudeness.

Is this accurate, would you say?

I saw a couple of episodes on Cartoon network. Also from experience as a kid I know that those are the kinds of obscure, hideously failed cartoon shows they play at 6:00 in the morning. Than they play higher quality old cartoons and finally new cartoons.

The only thing questionable I see about homestarrunner is the innuendo in sisters. There is very little violence.
