For the second time in a few weeks, this website (and its forum) have been "timing out" and not working. What's going on there?

I think the database occasionally throws an error when it tries to update a page. Normally this is no big deal, but if the timing is just right the server will hang waiting for the database. In the meantime, if another user comes along trying to view the same page, or if the first user reloads, it compounds the problem. If this happens on a popular page, the whole thing snowballs until the server slows to a crawl. I have some ideas on how to fix it.

Like getting the wiki to better detect when it's in a destructive loop and avoid it.

Is this what caused the crash on August 17 this year? Where the wiki was down for four something hours?

Let me answer your question with a question: Remember at the end of A Few Good Men where Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) was planning to call as witnesses two of the airmen who were working the night shift however many random days ago at Andrews Air Force Base where some flight may or may not have landed?

How do you do that?

The truth? You can't handle the truth! (Okay, I do need you on that wall.)
