I'm sure this is an issue that's been addressed several times before, so I apologize in advance for any repeated postings.

I think we can all agree that Homestar Runner doesn't get updated as often as it did once upon a time. HR used to be known for its weekly Monday updates, but now we only see updates once every 2 - 3 weeks. The Fanstuff and Quotes features aren't updated as often, either.

Now, I'm NOT complaining about this trend. We are blessed to have HR as a free site, and I understand that updates will happen when they happen. However, since TBC tend to keep to themselves, I can't help but speculate on the reasons for this declining frequency.

I think it's a combination of changes in the lives of TBC. First, as their popularity has grown, they've become attached to other projects, HR and otherwise. These include the SBCG4AP games, the DVDs, convention attendances and animations for third-party clients. (For instance, they spoke at their Georgia Tech appearance about a music video they were animating for some group's children's song.) Second, both Mike and Matt have become parents over the last three years. I'm not a parent myself, but my understanding is that caring for a child requires a tremendous time commitment.

Still, I'd love to hear additional theories from other fans on the board. Please share your thoughts.

Thanks.

Yeah, they're prob'ly just busier. At least they're still fairly regular. Although the "weeklies" seem to have become... um... not-weeklies. Almost monthlies now.

I'm thinking the whole state of Georgia being underwater might have something to do with the delay last week and this week too... I hope TBC are okay...

You know, I totally forgot about that major flood! But it seems that they're fine when something happens. When I heard (and watched a few videos) over the tornado outbreak that hit Atlanta, that got me a little worried, but they weren't hit or effected it seems, as two days later they updated the site.

I'm also beginning to wonder if part of the problem is TBC are starting to feel creatively stifled on the traditional HR cartoon front. They took a nine-month hiatus from Strong Bad E-mails, and it seems like more of their updates recently are more experimental in nature. It makes me think that they are becoming more and more anxious to push themselves creatively in ways they can't do with SBEmails and the other usual fare.

They obviously went through a period of Sbemail burnout. I think after that break, they came back to the genre with a different perspective. Right now, they know that they don't need to produce a cartoon every single week to keep up an income. It's irrelevant whether they come out with new content every month or every week to them and the once a week, every week schedule was probably burning them out creatively. Of course, while they were working on the games, they had plenty of Homestar-related reason to not be updating the site as regularly as previously.
That would be enough to excuse the lessening emphasis on weekly updates, but both Matt and Mike have young children and are plenty busy arranging playdates and making astronaut costumes.
So... everything that OP said and not much more.
